Boutique Beat – Cuffs Urban Apperal
July 25, 2008
It was very sad day in the Sedda home last week. My husband, one of the most fashionable men I know, takes great care in keeping his cherished belongings in good condition. So I can’t say that I was too shocked when I discovered in his closet over a year ago, a mint condition pair of B&L Ray-Ban (made in the USA no less) tortoise shell Wayfarers straight out of 1986! Total score since they had just come back in style and needless to say, I had been wearing them ever since. That is until after enjoying a picnic day in Capitol Park under my fave tree (Japanese Magnolia, blooms in Feb) we got home and I carelessly dropped them on the hardwood floor, snapping them into two equal pieces. I didn’t cry but I did scream bloody murder, and Gianni – well lets not go there.
This traumatic experience brought me to Cuffs Urban Apparel and my hunt for a replacement pair of super cool sunglasses. I think this place is great! They have men’s and women’s vintage clothing, as well as pieces by local designers. I am a serious fan of vintage clothes and it’s so true that fashion is cyclical; if you hold onto something long enough it will come back into style. And let’s hear it for supporting local artists (golf claps). I did see some clothes with the Pretty Trashy label, but I am not certain what other local designers they carry. Fill in the blank and check it out for yourself!
The peeps that work here are helpful and down to earth, openly offering the dressing room and a second opinion if you need one. Cuffs also has new and used hip accessories including hats, bags, shoes, earrings and sunglasses. For the ladies I especially liked the choices they had for spring/summer dresses.
They had great fake Wayfarers, but no real ones to be found. Apparently the authentic brand sunglasses that do come in go out just as quickly. I did purchase a funky thrift umbrella for $10 and a spunky yet casual pair of blue vintage pumps by Bandolino (made in Italy!) for $14. If you are in the market for a unique vintage piece, or an original design by a local artist, mosey on down to midtown and make it a priority to stop by Cuffs.
